At Heart Panadería x Downtime Bakery pop-up
Hi there!
For kids who grew up messing around and making friends in the original online internet spaces (AOL chat rooms, Tumblr, Myspace, Friendster, to name a few), it feels so special when you get a chance to make an internet friend, all these years later. The internet is so diffuse and massive now, with everyone fighting to make the loudest possible noise, that it feels increasingly rare to make a genuine connection at all. How do you even find people? How do you not sound weird? How do they not sound weird?
I knew, from the first days of messaging with Teresa Finney of Atlanta, Georgia’s At Heart Panadería over Instagram, that she and I were destined to be friends. Like me, Finney is not just a baker, but a writer, too. She’s sharp and cool and inspiring, and talking with her over Instagram and then later in video calls planning what would become our first (but not last) pop-up together, I felt like those old days when you just knew that somewhere in Boise, Idaho or Albuquerque, New Mexico there’s someone behind a dial-up connection who’s got your back. Teresa and I have been planning to bring her up to Philly for a bakery pop-up since, oh I don’t know, Downtime opened, and now it’s finally happening, and to say that I’m excited is an understatement.

Teresa makes some of the most elegant, beautiful, seasonal cakes, incredibly thoughtful Mexican pastries like conchas and puerquitos, and chocolate chunk cookies with masa harina. She’ll be selling all of these things on Sunday, November 2nd from 9am onwards at the bakery. To complement her menu, we’re going to make vegan sweet potato piloncillo cake, inspired by Teresa’s own recipe.
We opened preorders this morning so you can place your orders now. There will be a limited number of walk-in items available, too, so don’t fret if you miss out. Just mark your calendars — and I’ll be sure to remind you next week to come by.
See you then, and here’s to good things happening on the internet for once.
xo,
Dayna
Dayna’s What’s Up Corner
I have been revisiting my indie sleaze era lately and nearly broke my car speakers with The Strokes playing at full volume today. Tomorrow: The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The new vinyl-only King Tuff record is a delight, so warm and comforting. I went on a special visit to the Wharton Esherick House with Rachel and lost my mind at the beauty of his wood cuts. I visited Umbria Arts on Sunday after work and got to meet Angela Rio of Clockface Press. I love physical things, especially when they’re also funny. Big stuff coming down the pike between Umbria/Downtime/Tomorrow Today. More on that later…
Anything new with you??
