Meet us at the Philadelphia Art Museum next Friday night
Hello!
I’m writing to invite you to something special next Friday, March 13th! Recently, we had the honor of being asked by the Philadelphia Museum of Art to bake for their monthly Friday night art party, this one celebrating Women’s History Month. In a lot of ways, this was a dream ask for me: visual art is my second favorite creative medium (First is, of course, BOOKS! Nothing better on earth than books!!) and I spent the past month planning just what we should do with this cool opportunity. Thank you to our dearest Sophie for connecting us to the museum!
Because it’s women’s history month and with the grand exception of one Mr. A. Calder, my favorite artists are all not men, I decided to spend some time joyfully scrolling the collection archives on the PMA’s website to find inspiration. I found so much more than that. I found textiles and mystic art and drawings that looked like pretzels and sand art that looked like cookies and gloves that had cherry-red nails. By the end of the better part of a week, I had saved a hundred screenshots of artworks that I wanted to honor and celebrate at the pop-up. There are 170,000 pieces of art available to scroll on the PMA’s site, and I’ve been told I lean — haha — obsessive.
What I came up with is a menu of five baked goods that take inspiration from five women artists, all whose work is currently in the PMA’s collection: Betye Saar, Ana Mendieta, Louise Bourgeois, Reiko Sudo, and Elsa Schiaparelli. We’ll have two kinds of cookies, one glorious sheet cake, very special sourdough soft pretzels, and cucumber finger sandwiches to sell and share at the party. Julia, our wunderkind artist and cake decorator, is showcasing her skills on this Betye Saar-inspired cake. I mean would you look at this!
Plus, there will be so much more!
I’ve had the time of my life planning for and prepping all of this. I do hope you come out and see us! The Friday night party is from 5 to 8:30pm and there is a lot of amazing programming! Talks and DJs and artmaking and celebrating. It’ll be a great night, I promise. See you there.
xo,
Dayna
