💘 Nighttime at Downtime: Breakfast for Dinner 💘
Hi! It’s been a while, huh? Last time I wrote, we were about to go on winter break and now it’s already the end of January.
Some thoughts, to start: It bears repeating that the tragedy that we’re experiencing in America is unconscionable. It is not, like some have said, unimaginable, given the loudly-spoken intentions of the ghouls that continue to get reelected. This is the world they want to live in, and it is the world they have been empowered to create.
It is in our rights, however, to build something different and alternative, within and in resistance to these powers. No matter how hard they try, they won’t stop us from envisioning and building a better world.
In case it wasn’t clear, we run the bakery every day with the same politics and go to sleep with the same politics: no human being on this earth is illegal. We hope that you see Downtime as a safe haven, a place where all except ICE are welcome. We will continue to provide free union-printed Know Your Rights cards in both English and Spanish at the front counter of the bakery. We will continue to cook free meals for our community and donate bread and baked goods at the end of each day. We are a small business run by a small team and so we know our reach is limited; we have thin margins and rent to pay. But what is a bakery if not a community-in-miniature. It’s a place in which we prize safety, comfort, and togetherness, above all. And we won’t sacrifice those principles for anything.
Solidarity with those fighting on the streets for our fellow humans. Thank you for what you do.
Nighttime at Downtime
We 💘 breakfast for dinner, so we're turning the bakery into a full-service nighttime diner, for one night only, on Valentine’s Day. We've concocted a prix-fixe menu with all of our favorite diner foods, plus decaf coffee and spiked or plain orange juice for all.
There are two seatings: one at 5pm and one at 7pm. We can accommodate tables of 2 or of 4 (no uneven numbers please!). Unfortunately, we can't accommodate dietary restrictions, so check out the full menu below. Tickets are on sale now at downtimebakery.com.

Book of the Month — February
We are starting a new Book of the Month at the bakery, thanks to our friends at Tomorrow Today. This month’s favorite book is All Consuming by Ruby Tandoh. I loved this book and Tandoh’s reflections on everything from the global spread of bubble tea shops to why we choose to wait in line for things. For now, book of the month will be limited to purchases at the shop but some day in the next couple of months we’ll hopefully expand to an actual meetup where we can talk about books! Buy All Consuming at Downtime now!

Thursday loaf this week is…4-packs of sourdough English muffins!
That’s all for now! The What’s Up Corner is on pause this week. See you at the bakery.
xo,
Dayna
