Nighttime at Downtime, Vol. 1: A reading, Q+A, and Corsican snacks with Darrow Farr
Happy Monday, everyone.
Ever since we opened the bakery, we’ve been scheming behind the scenes to find ways to use the cafe in the evening. We have a big space that largely goes dormant after 4pm, and as two Geminis who run a bakery together, we have many other interests besides baking. Big surprise!
That’s why this fall we’re doing our first run of Nighttime at Downtime events. What is Nighttime at Downtime? It’s a monthly series where we’ll bring in people we love, admire, and think are cool to play music, read books, share their art, or make food, all with the benefit of ending before 9pm because we’re bakers and we need to sleep.
Volume 1 of Nighttime at Downtime is on Thursday, October 16th from 6 to 9pm with Darrow Farr, a writer whose debut novel The Bombshell had me rapt. It’s a propulsive story of the kidnapping of French teenager Séverine Guimard by Corsican liberation fighters gunning for independence on the island. As Guimard finds herself more invested in the politics of the militants, she becomes the surprising face of a movement. It’s so good and so compulsively readable. In the truest sense of the expression, I couldn’t put it down!

The event will be a reading, Q+A, and book signing with Farr. There will be Corsican snacks baked by me — chestnut snack cakes and castrinelli cookies with anise seed, hazelnuts, and orange zest. BYOB if you’d like!
You can buy two kinds of tickets to the event: $15 to attend, or $40 to attend and get a hardcover copy of the book.
Think of this as the IRL version of Dayna’s What’s Up Corner. Tickets are on sale now.
Can’t wait to see you there!
