Victoria sponges, maple creemees, and Best of Philly

Hi hello! It’s Dayna.

I’m writing with a few quick fun updates for the coming week at Downtime:

  1. First and foremost, we were given a cool award — the best bakery in Philadelphia, according to Philly Mag. We are honored and stunned by this and hope we can continue to live up to your expecations. If you love us, please leave us a Google review and tell us why. Or just say hi to me or Sam when we’re running around at work.

  2. To celebrate this fun honor, this Sunday, I’m going to make a couple 6-inch Victoria sponges, a very fun and nice British sandwich cake that has a layer of cream and raspberry or strawberry jam. We are getting some lovely local raspberries so I’ll make jam and use fresh raspberries, so if you want a cake on Sunday, they’ll be out at 9am. First come first served. No preorders necessary. Just a little treat to celebrate a nice thing.

  3. Sam had three dreams in life: To marry me (done), then to have a soft serve machine (done x2), and to use this soft serve machine to make maple creemees, the Vermont maple-flavored soft serve that you can get at roadside stands all over the lush, gorgeous Green Mountain State. This third dream is coming true this week — during soft serve hours (1 to 3pm) every day, we’ll have maple creemees flavored with maple syrup from his friend’s farm in Vermont. Shoutout Bunker Farm! Come by in the afternoons to taste the true flavor of Vermont.

    Yeah that’s right

That’s all, folks. See you at the bakery.

Dayna’s What’s Up Corner

I got a lot of responses to my last what’s up corner, which filled me to the brim with joy. I genuinely want to know what you’re up to so please write back! I just read a book I absolutely LOVED — Garden by the Sea by Mercè Rodoreda. I cannot recommend it highly enough. It was like Elena Ferrante but darker and Catalan – instantly bought the rest of Rodoreda’s work. I am listening, on repeat, to the new Wet Leg album, Moisturizer. I also am really enjoying the new Alex G album, Headlights. I surfed two days in a row this week and only managed to get sunburned one day and stood up more than a couple of times. My new board is awesome and I think, despite appearances, I am perhaps getting better at surfing (??). Anyone else going to the Lucy Dacus and Hop Along show at FDR on Friday? See you there if so.
